The Next Steps - Kupungarri & Bidyadanga
The Next Step: New Stories, New Technologies, New Artists is a creative and professional development project supporting emerging artists Mary-Lou Orliyarli Divilli and Nuriah Jadai. Through specialised mentoring, the artists worked with art consultant Emilia Galatis Projects to refine their artistic practice, develop new markets, and strengthen their professional capacity.
Based in their home communities in the Kimberley, both artists are exploring new creative directions — blending photography, painting, textiles, and printmaking to produce contemporary works that bridge traditional and modern forms of Aboriginal art. The project is designed to build confidence, strengthen market readiness, and create long-term career sustainability.
As respected community leaders, both artists are also sharing their knowledge with their communities, inspiring other women to participate in the arts. The project provides paid professional development, mentoring, and employment opportunities, connecting the artists with key industry networks and establishing pathways for future creative and economic growth.
Camera Story continues to work closely with both artists to support the next stage of their journey — their debut solo contemporary photography exhibitions.
This project has been supported by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and Regional Arts WA.
